About the Initiative

At a Glance

The Bloomberg American Health Initiative is training the next generation of public health leaders and supporting research to address five key issues impacting Americans' life expectancy: addiction and overdose, adolescent health, environmental challenges, food systems for health, and violence.

5 Focus Areas

We’re tackling five critical, 21st-century issues that challenge health in the United States

3 Cross-cutting Themes

Our work is deeply rooted in equity, evidence, and policy

1 Year Commitment

Bloomberg Fellows work for at least one year for their organizations following graduation

50+ Full-tuition Scholarships

We award more than 50 full-tuition MPH and DrPH scholarships to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health each year

$300 Million Donation

Bloomberg Philanthropies’ donation to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health that launched the Initiative

By spreading smart public health strategies that save lives and bringing people together to try new approaches, we can make the same strides in the 21st century against health threats like air pollution, gun violence, and obesity that we did in the 20th century against infectious disease. There’s no institution better equipped to lead the charge than Johns Hopkins.
