Environmental Challenges

Program Overview

The climate crisis is an existential threat to humanity, exemplifying the fact that policy decisions related to clean air and water, urban planning, transportation, and energy have lasting impacts on our health. When we design communities for cars, we increase air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. When we design communities for people, we increase physical activity and social connections. Decisions about the built environment, including zoning, housing, transportation, and energy require broad collaborative efforts. Public health can illuminate the critical issues and help bring about healthier and more sustainable communities.
