Food Systems for Health Steering Committee Member

Sonia Angell is a Bloomberg Professor of the Practice of American Health in the area of Food Systems for Health, in the Department of Epidemiology. She is an expert in public health, policy and systems change. She has over 15 years’ experience in government, from the local to global level, and remains current in the practice of primary care medicine.

She is also an assistant clinical professor at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and an Assistant Attending Physician at New York Presbyterian Hospital. She is the former Director of the California Department of Public Health and California State Public Health Officer (2019-2020), and a former Deputy Commissioner at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH, 2014 – 2019). She was a senior advisor on Global Noncommunicable Diseases at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta from 2011-2014. Before that, she was founding director of the Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Control Program at the NYC DOHMH (2004-2011).
