Elizabeth Nussbaumer is a Senior Program Officer at the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future (CLF) based in Baltimore, Maryland. In this capacity, she serves as the project director of the Aquatic Food Systems & Public Health Team and as a member of CLF’s executive team. Her project portfolio seeks to highlight the role of aquatic foods in transitioning food systems away from harmful industrial food production models and consumption patterns, toward those that support a just, sustainable, equitable and healthy future. Elizabeth and her colleagues collaborate with scientists, policymakers, coalitions, advocacy organizations, industry, and NGO partners to conduct research and implement projects involving public policy, education, technical assistance, and science advising. Liz has led projects documenting U.S. seafood supply chains, food safety risks of imported seafood, opportunities for improving energy and water use throughout supply chains, and factors that influence Americans’ consumption of aquatic foods.
Since 1996 the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future (CLF) has addressed some of the most pressing issues in the food system while advancing public health and protecting the environment. As an interdisciplinary academic center based within the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, CLF is a leader in public health research, education, policy, and advocacy and is dedicated to the application of science and systems thinking to build a healthy, just, equitable, and sustainable food system. CLF generates and communicates scientific evidence in support of policies promoting the transition to food production methods that align with public health and planetary health. It leads and contributes to public health advocacy initiatives to increase transparency in food systems and address environmental injustices associated with industrial agriculture. CLF also serves as a premier food systems education and training resource for a range of stakeholders engaged in food system transformation.
