Seeking Environmental Challenges Faculty Applicants

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is improving the health of people across the nation and around the world by addressing significant risks imposed by our changing environment, defined broadly to include our air, water, food, and built environment. Through the Bloomberg American Health Initiative, we are seeking multiple tenured or tenure-track faculty who seek to understand and reduce the impact of today’s environmental challenges in the United States. Applicants may focus their scholarship in any area related to the impact of environmental challenges including those beyond traditional public health boundaries such as urban planning, energy policy, or transportation policy. We specifically seek candidates committed to cross-disciplinary, collaborative research to assess and remedy the health effects of environmental risks.

The Bloomberg American Health Initiative aims to improve health and save lives in the United States by tackling five of America’s critical health challenges: drug addiction and overdose, environmental challenges, gun violence, obesity and the food system, and risks to adolescent health. Supported by a transformational $300 million gift from the Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Initiative aims to have impact through extensive collaborations with community and national partners, by training a new generation of leaders from multiple sectors in the tools of public health, by supporting a broad range of research to generate new insights, and by championing innovative programs and policies that can become national models. Faculty members chosen through this search will participate in the leadership of these efforts.

The faculty member(s) will have a primary appointment in the department best aligned with her/his interests, and rank will be commensurate with experience. Applicants should be trained at the doctoral level (e.g., PhD, MD, JD) in one of a diverse set of disciplines contributing to environmental solutions. The search is open to all ranks.

Successful applicants will have demonstrated: a commitment to addressing environmental issues; excellent scholarship that integrates student learning; an appreciation for the special needs of disadvantaged populations; and the leadership skills essential for multidisciplinary, collaborative, extramurally-funded research.

The Bloomberg American Health Initiative will provide a renewable endowed position of 5 years for senior faculty and 3 years for junior faculty for candidates chosen through this search.
