Food Systems for Health Research Areas

Interested in applying to the Bloomberg Fellows program in the food systems for health focus area? Our research primarily focuses in the areas below. Please be sure to select an option in your application.

Cities and Systems

How communities are planned and built—and the distribution of resources and opportunities—has a major influence on all dynamics influencing health outcomes, including food security and healthy diets. The goal of this workstream is to equip U.S. cities and their leaders to foster innovation, collaboration, and coordination across local governments to advance equitable, sustainable, and resilient food systems.

Kids Eat Healthy

Federal Child Nutrition Programs have been shown to reduce food insecurity, promote healthy eating, and prevent obesity for children and families, especially among those living in low-income households. The goal of this workstream is to increase participation, improve equity, increase consumption, and reduce waste in major food programs that support children and youth.

Indigenous Food Systems for Health

American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Peoples experience the most extreme health inequities in the nation. These inequities are historically rooted in forced transitions from traditional food systems and sustenance practices to reliance on commodity foods. This workstream aims to promote awareness, research, and policy change for Indigenous communities and reduce health inequities related to food systems.

Resilient Rural Communities

A considerable body of evidence has demonstrated how large-scale, industrialized food production can impact the environment and disproportionately burden rural communities and workers. This work stream aims to identify ways to address the public and environmental health impacts of food production through multidisciplinary, collaborative, and systems-oriented approaches.
